What went right, wrong for NBC at the Olympics

Despite lower ratings compared to the Sochi games four years ago, NBC's Olympics coverage routinely drew more viewers than ABC, CBS and Fox combined each night. Through Thursday, NBC had averaged 20. 6 million viewers in prime time for the network, the NBCSN cable network and streaming services. NBC's late-night show on the East Coast - which aired in prime time out West - was filled with live events, including the gripping gold medal women's hockey game between the U. S. and Canada.

Politician: Ex-Austrian chancellor part of Manafort lobbying

A Ukrainian opposition lawmaker says a former Austrian chancellor was among the European politicians who were allegedly secretly paid to lobby for Ukraine by Donald Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort KIEV, Ukraine -- A Ukrainian opposition lawmaker said Saturday that a former Austrian chancellor was among the European politicians who were allegedly secretly paid to lobby for Ukraine by Donald Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort. Serhiy Leshchenko spoke to The Associated Press a day after a grand jury in the United States indicted Manafort for allegedly paying former politicians to lobby on behalf of his client at the time, the pro-Moscow Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. "I remember there were a number of events that took place in Europe with the engagement of Mr. Gusenbauer and other former European politicians to present Mr. Yanukovych in better lights in Europe and I also remember Mr. Prodi was engaged in this activity as well," he said.

Investor Warren Buffett says good deals tough to find

OMAHA, Neb. -- Investor Warren Buffett says the acquisition frenzy on Wall Street is making it hard for him to find deals at the right price, but his Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate recorded a $29 billion gain because of the tax reforms Congress passed. In his annual letter to shareholders Saturday, Buffett mixed investment advice with details of how Berkshire's many businesses performed. That kept Berkshire from making the kinds of big deals Buffett prefers.

Here are some highlights from Milan Fashion Week womenswear previews for next fall and winter, including shows by Giorgio Armani, Salvatore Ferragamo, Jil Sander and Missoni. ARMANI AGAINST SHOCK RHETORIC ON AND OFF RUNWAYS Giorgio Armani countered the increasingly violent tones surfacing in his native Italy's election campaign by producing an ethnically inspired collection - and in rejecting fashion shows that use shock tactics to get attention. Airbnb unveils new category of rentals rated by inspectors

Airbnb is dispatching inspectors to rate a new category of properties listed on its home-rental service in an effort to reassure travelers they're booking nice places to stay SAN FRANCISCO -- Airbnb is dispatching inspectors to rate thousands of the properties listed on its home-rental service in an effort to reassure travelers they're booking nice places to stay. The hands-on touch built into the Plus program comes 10 years after Chesky and his former roommate started Airbnb in a San Francisco apartment in hopes of bringing in more money to pay their own rent. During a presentation in San Francisco, Chesky announced other steps designed to make Airbnb more like a traditional hospitality company instead of an industry renegade that has siphoned business away from major hotels.

Beyond 'Obamacare': New liberal plan on health care overhaul

WASHINGTON -- A major liberal policy group is raising the ante on the health care debate with a new plan that builds on Medicare to guarantee coverage for all. Called "Medicare Extra for All," the proposal to be released Thursday by the Center for American Progress gives politically energized Democrats more options to achieve a long-sought goal. A nonpartisan expert who independently reviewed the Medicare Extra plan said it could provide Democrats with a middle way to achieve their longstanding goal of coverage for all.

Oscars fashion through the years: The great and the puzzling

The long and short of Oscars fashion through the decades includes the great and the puzzling NEW YORK -- A radiant Grace Kelly glided from her seat, pulling up her long opera gloves, her little evening bag balanced on one arm, as she collected a best actress trophy for "The Country Girl" at the 1955 Academy Awards. Worn with elbow length gloves and little other adornment, Grace Kelly set the bar for a new modern glamour and yet the color is deliciously unorthodox," said Jo Ellison, fashion editor at the Financial Times and author of the book "Vogue: The Gown. "It was her vibrant red Ralph Lauren gown with cape at the 2014 Golden Globes that launched her as a fashion It Girl in 2014, but it was her soft blue Cinderella Prada later that year, with its crystal sparkle in the pleats, low V neck and delicate headband that secured her spot, let alone on screen with "12 Years a Slave" and, now, "Black Panther. Google's digital assistant branches out to Nest camera

SAN FRANCISCO -- Google's voice-activated assistant is branching out to Nest's deluxe security camera in an expansion that may amplify the privacy concerns surrounding internet-connected microphones. Google's assistant already can be used to control Nest's cameras and internet-connected thermostat through its internet-connected speaker, Home, and smartphones running on its Android software. Even if Google's assistant doesn't eavesdrop, its presence on an indoor security camera is likely to focus more attention on the handling and protection of the data collected through internet-connected devices.

US women beat Canada for gold in a 3-2 shootout thriller

That would be 20-year-old goalie Maddie Rooney, who stuffed the last two Canadian shooters to wrap up a 3-2 victory Thursday that snapped the Americans' 20-year gold medal drought and ended Canada's bid for a fifth straight title in the first shootout in an Olympic women's final. The Americans piled over the boards, throwing gloves in the air before piling on top of Rooney on the ice - 20 years after their last gold medal in women's hockey and 38 years to the day after the men's famous "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet team in group play at Lake Placid. Canada had won 24 straight Olympic games to go along with those four consecutive gold medals - a streak of success in a women's team sport second only to the U. S. basketball team's current streak of six straight gold.

Unprepared and outclassed, North Korea wraps up Olympics

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- Unprepared and outclassed, North Korea's 22 athletes wrapped up their competition at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Thursday without a finish higher than 13th. North Korea wasn't expected to come to Pyeongchang until a last-minute announcement by Kim Jong Un on New Year's Day that he wanted to send a team, which set off a flurry of North-South diplomatic machinations allowing their delegation to cross the border. The sentimental highlight of the North's participation in the games was the joint Korea ice hockey team, which featured players from North and South for the first time.
